Well, several things come to mind on loss of oil pressure:
1) You ran over something in the road and knocked a hole in the oil pan and that's where the oil went - suddenly. Was the oil pressure normal and then suddenly go to zero ?
2) Assuming option 1 is not the cause perhaps oil has leaked from the engine and the level is now too low to be picked up by the engine's oil pump - what does the dipstick say about oil level ? If you can't see any oil on the dipstick, and an inspection of the oil pan and bottom side of the car doesn't show a catastrophic leak, then try to add oil, say a quart or two and see if you can get a reading on the dispstick - if that works, start the engine and see if the oil pressure returns to normal or near normal - if it does go find out where the oil has been going
3) Plugged oil filter - when was the last time it was changed, and did you use a good quality brand ? - Change the oil filter ...
4) Oil pump or oil pump drive shaft has failed - this required pulling the oil pan and removing the pump and drive shaft - can be expensive and requires the services of a good mechanic
Hopefully you spotted the 0 oil pressure quickly and shut the engine off - else you have more serious problems to consider...
Good luck and happy hunting....!Wat could be wrong with a car that loses oil pressure while driving and how expensive could it be to fix?
most likely worn journal bearings on the main crankshaft less than 200 dollars for the parts. some cars you can drop the oilpan and fish in the bearings. other requires pulling and rebuilding the engineWat could be wrong with a car that loses oil pressure while driving and how expensive could it be to fix?
It is either leaking out or slipping past the piston rings. If leaking must find and repair leak, could be hose or oil pump could cost $150-$250.If burning oil because need ring job, you are talking about big money-$750-$1,000 or more.
