I noticed my 2003 Accord was burning oil at about 85k and mentioned it at the dealership and was told that it was normal when you use synthetic. At that time I was burning about 1 litre every 3500-4500 kms. The problem continued to worsen and when I was beginning to get more concerned I started to record the problem and noted I was burning a litre at least every 2500kms. Honda said they would run an oil consumption test. I did this and documented 1 litre burned every 1867 kms. That was considered normal by Honda Canada. I was told Honda wouldn't do anything until it was burning 1 litre of oil every 1500kms. I kept track of the oil consumption and I contacted Honda Canada's head office who had an engine technician call me and tell me that Honda's spec for excessive oil consumption for a NEW Honda (not a 2003 Accord) was 1 litre of oil every 1000kms. They would do nothing for me until oil consumption exceeded their spec. I had a Honda Plus extended warranty up to 160,000 kms. I recently have exceeded the warranty mileage and am at about 162,000km. My oil consumption is now close to their spec for warranty work of 1 litre every 1000kms. My warranty is now expired. The first warranty oil consumption test done trhough the Honda dealer in Cobourg ON Canada was begun at approximately 112,000 kms and concluded at approximately 130,000 kms. Do I have any options? How can i get honda canada to fix my oil consumption problem on my 2003 accord?
Sorry to say but your options are limited and expensive. I'm not saying the Honda is right but legally you don't have much of a case in terms of the warranty terms and conditons for which to base any arguments on.
the warranty (and the extended service contract) cover defects in materials and workmanship. Nothing has been proven 'defective' under the terms of at warranty. Just because the oil consumption doesn't meet your expectations doesn't mean that there is a manufacturing related defect that is responsible for the oil consumption. There is a distinct difference between design tolerance and manufacturing defect. Many conditions fall into a category where what is acceptable to one person is not acceptable to another--interior noise levels, fuel economy, idle vibration etc. When you're dealing with mass produced vehicles there will be variances from one to another and from user to user.
Honda doesn't consider that consumption to be out of the normal range of values for oil consumption. The fact that it is decreaseing could indicate wear and wear was never covered under any warranty. To pursue a claim against Honda would require you have the cause of the oil consumption diagnosed and documented and that will be expensive; particularly if the shop is unable to find anything outside of the design specs that is not normal wear. The burden of proof is on you, not on Honda. Again, whatever they find would have to be related back to a manufacturing defect which at the current mileage on the vehicle would be extremely difficult to argue.
further, once you pay to have the engine disassembled and forensically diagnosed you would, provided there is any evidence of 'defect' have to incur the costs of taking the case to court.
Its a difficult case to win.
Again, I'm not defending Honda nor saying that there isn't a problem, just that legally its a tough case to win.

Since the warranty expired they will not fix it. Guess your going to have to pay out of the pocket for repairs.
