My car is leaking oil. Can I fix it?

Heya, I have a 1990 Corolla and it's leaking a dark brown oil from under the engine. It's underneath the middle of the engine and leaks slowly, drips. I'm not sure if its engine oil or gearbox oil.

How can I tell the difference? And is it possible for me to fix myself or will I need to take it to a mechanic.

Thanks :)My car is leaking oil. Can I fix it?
transmission fluid is red so i believe its engine oil. first clean the engine up and then see where the leak comes from, usually its just something thats loose. usually its the oil drain pan bolt, and u can just tighten it yourself, if its something like the valve cover, u need to get a new valve cover gasket, and other times its coming from the block and cylinder head, but who knows. you should check it out.My car is leaking oil. dark brown is probably gearbox oil. Smell it, oil is not as pugnant as gear oil. If it's engine oil you should notice a decrease on your dipstick after a while. Fixing it yourself will be cheaper, I would buy a book though.
you,ll probably need to take that one to a mechanic,if its about half way of the car it could be a rear main engine seal going out on it and that will require a lot of work to repair it,have a shop check it though before you let any one just start working on it,it might save you some money by having it checked first, good luck on it.
Mileage? First Steam Clean the Engine %26amp; Transmission Top %26amp; Bottom. Run the Engine for 3 to 5 minutes then check for leaks. Are you at all Mechanically Inclined? On your transmission there are there are Two Output Seals, a Front Seal, Drain and Fill Plugs. In a Good Transmission Shop it shouldn't cost that much.

Could be the Engine but from what you say it sounds more like the Transmission Seals.
Well Steve,...the first thing you should do is pull the engine oil dipstick to check the engine oil level to see if the oil is down. Do the same thing with the transmission dipstick (assuming it's automatic). You of course know to check the engine oil with the engine OFF. Check the automatis transmission with the engine running. Dirty engine oil can be brown. However, transmission fluid starts out red.....and can turn brown when dirty or overheated.

When was the last time you changed the engine oil and transmission fluid?

Best bet is to take it to a reputable garage for a free estimate....most places do that.

GOOD LUCK Steve
Gearbox oil has a really pungent smell, take a sample with your finger and just simply sniff it.If it has that stong smell, then it's gearbox oil. That's if it's a stick shift. If automatic, then it could be trany fluid, even thiugh tranny fluid is red,but if it's realy old, then it'll be brown. If it smells like gas, then it's oil.as oil gets old,it gets combustion residue in it therefore makin it smell a liitle like gas.If it's tranny fluid or gearbox oil, most likely it's from an axle seal, but on automatics,it cold also be the pan gasket. If it's engine oil, then it's probably the oil pan or the valve cover,or the oil filter. The best way to tell where an engine oil leak is is to buy this special dye at the autom parts store, add it to the engine oil, drive it about 10 miles, and it will show u where the leaks are.
You didn't mention whether it's an automatic or a manual transmission. AT fluid is red, manual transmission oil is usually brown.

Put a piece of clean white cardboard under the engine/trans overnight to check the leaking fluid. This will give a better indication where it's coming from, and will show the color better.

If it's a slow, constant drip, it might be a leaking oil pan gasket or a loose drain plug. If it leaks more with the engine running, it could be a main seal; fronts aren't so bad, but a rear seal means pulling the transmission to get to the seal on the engine.

Since you're asking questions about car repair on the internet, you probably shouldn't tackle anything more complicated than maybe tightening the drain plug (remember, ';righty-tighty, lefty-loosy';).

Once you have an idea where the leak is coming from, you can point it out to a mechanic.
No take it to the mechanic it could be a leak from the oil pan.If you know about mechanics then you should be able to fix it yourself. But check your oil pan :)
