Oil light has been coming on for past couple weeks when I hit the brake or slow down, put in 3 qts oil yesterday and today the light is staying on and now I'm afraid to drive it and don't know what to do please help have to drive 300 miles to hospital in the morning for son having surgery---what else should I check? How can I fix the oil light or oil problem I have on 2000 Dodge Neon?
it sounds like you have either an oil pump going bad on it or the oil sending unit is going out but if its using that much oil your going to have to find out where its going to when you see the oil light come on stop and shut it off don't keep driving it,that can ruin an engine, those cars normally never used oil unless there's a problem or a leak,i hope you find it before an engine gets ruined.id find other transportation if need for the hospital, that car may not make the trip, good luck with it.How can I fix the oil light or oil problem I have on 2000 Dodge Neon?
your very welcome,im glad it turned out to be a simple thing, good luck. Report Abuse

it sounds to me like you have to much oil in your car. when you were hitting the brakes it was causing the oil to move in your pan. check the dipstick and oil pressure
check the sending unit
First thing is to check the oil on the dipstick, preferably when cold . How much oil is on the stick, then add, if necessary. There may be a problem with the oil pressure sending unit or wiring itself. Sending units go bad and leak oil and if losing oil you need to find out where it is being lost and repair.

It could be a bad switch but it could also be a much worse problem such as a bad oil pump or oil sludge build-up. Personally, I would have the car towed to a trusted shop/dealer/mechanic and have them check it out just to avoid any permanent damage ( although if you had to add 3 quarts of oil yesterday AND you drove the vehicle like that for 2 weeks, some damage may have already occurred ).

If you need a car in the meantime, rent or borrow another one.
It sounds like your oil pump went bad. Don't drive it (or run the engine) if the llight is on. It may just be a bad oil pressure switch but you need to get it to a shop. Maybe the repair shop can loan you a car. If not borrow or rent one.
as soon as your oil light comes on you shut the car off. if you drove it for a couple weeks with the light going on and off, then added 3 quarts of oil you have done internal engine damgage. your car has an oil leak or is burnging the oil. you have to monitor your oil level. driving a car with the oil light going on and off 3 quarts low on oil will destroy the oil pump and crank bearings. tow it to a shop and have them check the oil pressure with a manual gauge. be prepared to find that you need an engine.
