I have a 99 Grand Am, 186000 miles. I was told by a mechanic that it's leaking oil from the head gasket. That's all I know. Of course, it's more than the car is worth to fix this. It's not mixing with coolant or smoking, just leaking a lot of oil. I'm putting a quart in every other week.
Is there a way to seal this somehow using something like Bar's Stop Leak, etc? I know this is a crappy way to fix a car but I don't have the $ for the better options. Any advice would be great, thanks!Temporary fix to oil leaking from head gasket?
If you are looking for a very cheap fix, I would clean the area where the oil is leaking out and apply some JB weld around the area. Let it dry and set up sufficiently before running the engine again. At least it may slow the leak down a little bit.
Also the thinner the oil you are using, the more likely the engine will leak oil. Try using a higher viscosity oil to try to slow down the leakage. Try a 20W40 or something higher in viscosity. The thinner the oil the more oil will find it's way to the leak and leak out. The thicker the oil it may not leak as much..... Try it out. The higher viscosity oil will probably run you about $30 and the JB weld is only like $7 so even if none of that works your not out a whole lot of money... Good luck!Temporary fix to oil leaking from head gasket?
It is VERY rare for a head gasket to leak oil externally. I believe that youare misunderstanding the problem. Most oil leaks come from the valve cover gasket(s). Many times, all you need to do is tighten the cover bolts. Many GM engines were assembled with gorilla snot (silicone rubber from a tube). Luckily, Fel-Pro usually has REAL gaskets for these engines. It is a DIY thing. Power wash the engine first with GUNK Orange. Wash all signs of oil leaks away. Use hand tools to remove the valve covers. Clean them with easy-off oven spray or gasket remover. Install the REAL, new gasket, and re-install the valve cover bolts. It's a piece of CAKE!!! Never add anything to your oil to stop leaks. It will damage expensive oil pump and relief valves and can ruin the engine. Good luck!!
well, imn sorry to say none of those products really work what you will have to do is replace the head gasket plain and simple you could do it your self its not a lot of work remove the head and replace gasket put head back on
you should fix this problem soon be fore it starts giving you more toruble
water yes//oil no//and you have to really be ready because in hot weather with oil leak getting larger the oil may flash and you will be on fire under the hood--not a pleasant thought/but it happens/you will be like an old spad going down over the argonnes in ww1 trailing smoke and no parachute
a quart every other week isnt bad but it sounds like a valve cover gasket if the head was cracked bad enough to leak oil you would have a misfiring problem or real bad engine shaking i suggest another mechanic
maybe just the tappet cover gasket needs replacing, sounds like that too me.
