The car hasn't been so peppy in the past week or so. This oil light flickering started yesterday and and today upon cold start. It flickered 4-5 times during the first 1/2 mile, then seems ok.Why does the oil light flicker the first half mile I drive my 115,00mile 2000 Lincoln? What's wrong? Fix cost?
Is there enough oil in the motor ? if so it could be your oil sending unit. Don't listen to penny she is not even close !!Why does the oil light flicker the first half mile I drive my 115,00mile 2000 Lincoln? What's wrong? Fix cost?
That light means either oil pressure is low or the oil pressure sensor is going bad.
I'd get it checked out ASAP - if it's turns out to be low oil pressure and not just a problem with the pressure sensor, low oil pressure can quickly mean a dead engine.
If it's a sensor problem it should be a fairly cheap fix (under ~$200 labor cost included - significantly less if you do the work yourself). If it's an actual problem with oil pressure it could cost quite a bit more (a new oil pump, finding if/where oil flow is blocked and cleaning / de-sludging oil system etc., is time consuming and can get expensive.)
Let's hope it just needs another quart of oil. It would make sense that it would only happen when it's cold, after the oil warms up and expands it might be just enough to keep the oil light from triggering.
If not that then I'm betting on the oil pump. It's getting old and not pumping at full pressure until the oil warms up and gets thinner and easier for it to move.
check your oil. if low add some. then check for leaks, oil pan, plug, filter. also check tranny fluid. also try disconnecting your negative battery cable for ten seconds and hook it back up it will reset your computer!
change your oil or oil sending unit unit cost about 20 bucks and easy to replace just unscrews and one wire might take 20 minutes or less
oil pump could be going out. about a 300-500 job depending on where you take it, and how hard it is to get to the engine.
