I have a 2005 Subaru Legacy 2.5i. I recently ran out of engine oil, less than 1 quart was left in the engine by the time I caught it. A knock developed, that increases in intensity based on engine RPMs. I had it checked out by the dealership, and they indicated that it was a valve stem knock, but want $1200 to tear down the engine before they know exactly what is wrong. I am sure that it will cost even more to fix, once they get it apart.
Do I have any other options, to fix the problem? I am turning in my lease soon, so I am not opposed to temporary solutions. Since I know the cause was lack of oil, I don't think we need to research the underlying cause any further. Could I possibly replace them myself (I do not have any experience fixing engines), or what should I be paying a shop to replace them? Do I have any other options? How do I fix engine knock caused by running out of oil - Valve stem knock?
You probably have more than valve stem knock.[what ever that is] Your engine needs a complete rebuild. Big bucks.
