since there is no joints or moving parts is it necessary? and if so what are some options for an oil?
thanks much,
codyFixed blade knife need oil?
If it's made of stainless steel, then no.....no oil is necessary on it.
It doesn't hurt to wipe some light weight oil on a carbon steel blade to protect it from rust.
Any gun oil will protect a knife's blade as well.

Using the oil you already have for your firearm on your knife is the logical thing to do. Scent from the oil on your blade is moot because your rifle or shotgun that you'll have with you will have the same oil on it or in it also.
Either way....you don't need a ton of oil on it to protect it. A very light coat is all that's required.
Make sense?Fixed blade knife need oil?
I have a very expensive, hunting knife made with D2 steel with a matte, low reflection finish, and the mfg'r. recommends that you use ';food-grade'; silicone to protect the steel. Your other option is mineral oil as it's a protectant that doesn't go bad, edible, and does a good job of protecting. With any knife, you'll have to put oil on after/before each use.
Remember that stainless steel is not perfect and it will still rust over time or if it's not dried or looked after properly. I've seen a few fillet knives that were rusty not to mention my crappy Leatherman Wave II.
yes if the blade is not stainless, as far as oils go I would not spend money on a pricey gun oil but just use WD-40 or 3in-One oil. the knife when oiled will be more resistant to the elements. If it is your hunting knife do not oil, the sent of oil will carry for 100's of YD's. if normal knife you have for defense or around the house use then slap some WD on it with a cloth let sit for 3-5 minutes then lightly wipe off.
That would depend on what the blade is made of.
We only own high carbon steel blades.
You look at them wrong, and they will rust.
I use only clove mixed with mineral oil
Any blade less, isn't worth owning
